The bulky Sony PlayStation 3 (now referred to as the phat PS3) was released in the UK March 23rd 2007 over 15 months after the Xbox360 and at £425! Which probably why I didn’t have PS3 until around 2012 when it was discontinued.
Thats not a bad thing as what it did do was allow me to experience the PS3 games that weren’t on the Xbox360 and at a discounted price, let’s think about this – is a book any less enjoyable if you read it 10 years after it was written – no, so games shouldn’t always be looked at as only ‘relevant’ in the time that they were released.
The first PS3 phat had the ability to play PS2 games as well as PS1 and PS3 games which makes it sought after with retro collectors and gamers. Later on, in the Phat’s revision Sony dropped the PS2 capability, this was because the PS2 wasn’t emulation – it was dedicated PS2 hardware working with the PS3 to deliver the gameplay experience. Sony probably dropped this feature for costs and maybe people didn’t really use that feature often, let’s look at it from the fact that PS3 was HD gaming and the PS2 wasn’t so there was a notable different in graphics.
The PS3 is a 1080p power house, as what I’ve noticed is that it does 1080p more often than Xbox 360 games who mostly are outputted at 720p. Not forgetting the PS3’s blu-ray ability, removed the need for a stand alone player.
I’m not going into the specs of the PS3, there are plenty of sites with that information… I’m just here for the games!
Games
Sony shared third party games with other systems as has been the norm for decades, but where the PS3 strengths are in the quality and size of its 1st games and exclusives, for me I really look for 2 things in a game, that is gameplay and story-telling either together or separate. Games like Uncharted series, Gran Turismo, Yakuza series, Killzone, resistance but to name a few.
